Is avoiding the fact that human beings actually operate vehicles a part of the LA Times style manual now?
Here’s one from today:
At least two people hurt when car strikes Winnetka apartment
At least two people were injured Thursday night in Winnetka after a car plowed into an apartment building, authorities said.
The car struck the building, in the 20000 block of Saticoy Street, about 9:15 p.m., said Erik Scott, a spokesman with the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The extent of the two people’s injuries was not immediately known, nor whether they were in the car or the building.
The L.A. Department of Building and Safety was at the scene to assess the structural integrity of the building, Scott said.
Cars, man. They’re on a rampage! At least we know, per the third paragraph, that there may have been at least one person in the car.

Hi Shane, you have hit on quite a point on how the media reports car crashes (BTW, they are not accidents) which appears to make the vehicles, rather than their drivers, responsible for car crashes and their resulting carnage. A very cursory Google search on car crashes in New Zealand came up with things like "The light truck allegedly crossed the centre line and drove into the path of the 11-tonne vehicle on State Highway 1, about 30km south of Whangarei" and "Police said initial reports indicated a north-bound car had struck the median barrier and rolled over" and "The 33-year-old woman was a passenger in the car, which lost control and smashed into a tree on Papaiti Rd, around 6km northeast of Wanganui, shortly before 1am, police said." All of these seem to blame the vehicle rather than the vehicle operator for having caused the crashes.
